13. Marie-Antoinette

Hello knitters and cheer up!

Winter is just around the corner, the temperature is dropping, and ministers are getting out their turtlenecks. But Wolly Roger's crew is still sizzling hot to keep you cozy no matter what.

When creating this English ribbed hat, also called brioche stitch by our English-speaking friends, it was impossible for me not to think of a certain historical figure, so I present to you the Marie-Antoinette hat collar & hat set.

When I think of Marie Antoinette, the first image that comes to mind is that of the delightful actress who plays the queen, Kirsten Dunst, in Sofia Coppola's eponymous film. Some might criticize the film for its anachronisms and its sour candy side. I must admit that this kind of adaptation normally makes me cringe, but having seen this film when it was released in 2006, nostalgia has given it a very special place in my heart.

An urban legend attributes to Marie-Antoinette, then Queen of France, the quote "If they have no bread, let them eat brioche" in response to the famine suffered by the people. This phrase is actually taken from the famous "Confessions" by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, recounting the author's life until 1765. The princess referred to by our national JJ is not mentioned, but since Marie-Antoinette left her native Austria to marry Louis XVI in 1770, it is historically impossible that she was the one behind this offbeat response.

Obviously, the social tensions of the time as well as the Queen's escapades made this insolence credible and it didn't take much for personalities of all stripes to regularly bring out this phrase, brought up to date.

Brioche stitch creates a knit suitable for all kinds of daring: reversible, two-tone... nothing is too extravagant for it. Puffy, to say the least, its material is perfect for cozy, very enveloping and elastic knits. Exit the Petit Trianon, with the Sand Bank and Reflecting Pool colors from Malabrigo Rios, Marie-Antoinette is at the beach!

A little intimidating at first, the brioche stitch can quickly be mastered and knitting it in two colors has the advantage of serving as a reminder.

Each of the 2 rows will always be knitted in the same shade, you will not lose the thread or the head ^^

This pattern requires a good basic knitting skill.
