07. What will we do with a Drunken Sailor?

Hello knitters and cheer up!

Today we're going to make a hat together, but not just any hat, we're going to knit the "Drunken Sailor" hat!

This is the first addition to the Wolly Roger collection.

This hat was designed to be knitted with a full skein of Malabrigo Chunky. However, you can also opt for a more rustic yarn like Erika Knight's Big Vintage Wool.

Why "Drunken Sailor"? Because it's the name of the most famous sea shanty, so famous that it was even used in an advertisement by a certain captain to sell breaded fish! If the name doesn't mean anything to you, don't listen to this incredible version performed by the band The Irish Rovers , or you'll risk having it stuck in your head all day...

Sea shanties were a way to give rhythm to the work on board and keep the crew members in sync. It's easy to imagine that before the industrial era, when almost everything depended on the physical efforts of workers, giving yourself a little boost was no luxury!

This pattern is therefore an easy and quick model to make, ideal for a last-minute gift for example. You will have noticed because we can't hide anything from you, it is a rather thick and warm hat, it will suit men and women both in its design and its size.

So 4 particular techniques will be used here:

- elastic mounting ,

- circular knitting ,

- 1/1 ribs ,

- the double vertical decrease (ddv) .

I guide you, step by step, to perform these techniques on the Wolly Roger YouTube channel, in the DRUNKEN SAILOR playlist .

Each ddv reduces by 2 stitches.

The ddv is made on 3 stitches of which the central stitch is a knit stitch.

*

Place the yarn on a tapestry needle and pass through the remaining 8 sts twice and pull the yarn firmly to close the top opening.

*

Tuck in the ends, wash and air dry without stretching the hat.

Don't forget to wring out your hat well before drying it, this will speed up drying considerably!

Malabrigo Chunky is a thick yarn and the ribbing creates a dense knit, which will be great when worn on your ears, but unfortunately it will take a while to dry.
