Hello knitters and cheer up!


Today I would like to talk to you about the different sizes of threads you can find at Wolly Roger. We base our categorization of thread sizes on this classic system .

 

However, each store/country/knitter/brand has its own categorization system and there is no consensus yet. We always encourage you to be careful and carefully check the recommended needle size AND the gauge indicated to be sure that you choose a yarn that fully meets your expectations.

 

We often talk about knitting and tend to mention our crochet friends less, but for this article, don't worry, everyone will be included ^^

 

LACE

A thread is considered to belong to the LACE category when:

 

- its sample represents between 33 and 40 stitches in jersey for knitting

- its sample represents between 32 and 42 crochet stitches

- it knits/crochets from 1.5mm to 2.25mm

 

FINGERING

A thread is considered to belong to the FINGERING (or super fine) category when:

 

- its sample represents between 27 and 32 stitches in jersey for knitting

- its sample represents between 21 and 32 crochet stitches

- it is generally knitted/crocheted from 2.25 mm to 3.25 mm

 

SPORT

A thread is considered to belong to the SPORT (or fine) category when:

 

- its sample represents between 23 and 26 stitches in jersey for knitting

- it is generally knitted from 3.5 mm to 4 mm

OR

- its sample represents between 16 and 20 crochet stitches

- it generally crochets from 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm

 

DK

A yarn is considered to be in the DK (or lightweight) category when:

 

- its sample represents between 21 and 24 stitches in jersey for knitting

- it is generally knitted from 3.75 mm to 4.5 mm

OR

- its sample represents between 12 and 27 crochet stitches

- it is generally crocheted from 4.5 mm to 5.5 mm

 

ARAN

A wire is considered to belong to category A RAN (or medium) when:

 

- its sample represents between 16 and 20 stitches in jersey for knitting,

- it is generally knitted from 4.5 mm to 5.5 mm.

OR

- its sample represents between 11 and 14 crochet stitches,

- it generally crochets from 5.5 mm to 6.5 mm.

 

BULKY

A thread is considered to belong to category B ULKY (or thick) when:

 

- its sample represents between 12 and 15 stitches in jersey for knitting,

- it is generally knitted from 5.5 mm to 8 mm.

OR

- its sample represents between 8 and 11 crochet stitches,

- it generally crochets from 6.5 mm to 9 mm.

 

SUPER BULKY

A thread is considered to belong to the SUPER B ULKY (or very thick) category when:

 

- its sample represents between 7 and 12 stitches in jersey for knitting,

- it is generally knitted from 8 mm to 12 mm.

OR

- its sample represents between 7 and 9 crochet stitches,

- he generally crochets from 9 mm to 15 mm.
