1880 is a fair, local, traceable, ethical yarn, made exclusively from wool from Île-de-France sheep farms located around the Fonty spinning mill, with which a fair trade system has been set up.
After shearing and collecting the fleeces, the wool is washed in Haute-Loire and then pre-combed in the North (in the last two washing and combing factories still operating in France). It is then sized, carded, spun, twisted, reeled, degreased, dyed, sprayed and balled in Creuse at the Fonty Spinning Mill.
This process, without intermediaries and entirely managed by the Filature, allows for a reasoned collaboration with each of the stakeholders. This yarn is part of the overall eco-responsible approach deployed by the Filature Fonty, and in particular meets the objective of revitalizing the French and local wool industry through concrete, committed, and future-proof actions. It also aims to offer the opportunity to rediscover other fibers of sheep origin, with other characteristics and qualities, in a world of knitting wool dominated and standardized by "all-merino."
The name 1880 was chosen to mark the 140th anniversary of the founding of Filature Fonty. It was at this time that the first synthetic pigments appeared, revolutionizing European textiles. The colors in the 1880 range are inspired by those that were in vogue at the time, and which can be found in paintings from the second half of the 19th century, for example at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
1880 is a carded yarn twisted into 2 strands, elastic and bulky, which is knitted with needles number 4, 5 or 5. It is pleasant to the touch, and has little to envy of merino wool yarns. It is hand-washable, preferably with organic soap, and dry flat.
