Fado is a 100% natural, untreated, undyed, ecological knitting yarn made entirely from wool from two iconic breeds of merino sheep. Arles Merino, naturally off-white, raised in the Crau plain in Provence; Portuguese Black Merino, naturally dark brown, raised in the Alentejo province in southern Portugal, but also established by Fonty and the Lainamac association on Creuse farms. This project aims to develop the Massif Central wool sector, while minimizing the ecological impacts linked to transport.
The result is breathtaking: by varying the mixtures of the two fleeces, Fonty obtains colors ranging from ecru white to dark brown, including three browns: light, medium, and deep.
Fado is a carded knitting yarn twisted into 3 strands, bulky and supple, pleasant to the touch, which is knitted with number 5 needles. It is hand washed, preferably with organic soap, and dried flat. Like all untreated natural knitting yarns, it has the particularity of softening over successive washes.
With its Fado yarn, the Fonty spinning mill invites us to be sensitive to the skin!
